Malaysia observes 14 days of federal holidays, except Sarawak which observes 13 days. Besides that, weekend varies between states. Most states in Malaysia observe Saturday & Sunday weekend, however, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu observe a Friday & Saturday weekend. When an employee is asked to work on public holiday, the employee should be compensated two times of their ordinary wages or given another day off.
Malaysia is ranked number 7 in the world with the highest numbers of public holidays. It’s contributed by multiethnic country which celebrates Muslim’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, and Deepavali. Employees can take advantage of the public holidays by applying leaves during long weekend to enjoy a longer day off.
